     CRICKET

     INTRODUCTION:

  • Cricket is an ancient game, and it grew in England.
  • In the 17th century, it became popular and trendy.
  • Till mid of 18th century, the cricket bat was like a hockey stick.
  • Cricket grew into a modern game, and it has a history of its own.
  • It is played and watched all over the world and is loved by millions of people. You also see that most schools, colleges, and universities include cricket as part of their physical education curriculum. Nearly every town has a team that plays in a local competition.
  • Cricket is an exciting and interesting game. It also a fun, social game to play, that’s easy to learn and can be enjoyed by boys and girls from as young as 5 years old. 


History:

Cricket has a known history beginning at the end of the 16th century. There have different suppositions about the game's origins that it was created in France or Flander.
                                 The earliest definite reference to cricket is dated Monday, 17 January 1597 (i.e., an "Old Style" Julian date, 27 January 1598 by modern reckoning under the Gregorian calendar).
                                  It was originated in south-east England. It became the country's national sport in the 18th century and has developed globally in the 19th and 20th centuries. International matches have been played since 1844, and Test cricket matches began in 1877. Cricket is the world's second most popular watcher or spectator sport after association football (soccer).  
                                 The first written 'Law' of cricket was introduced in 1744, the world's first Cricket Club was formed in Hambledon in the 1760s and the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) was founded in 1787. In 1788 MCC became the guardian of cricket's regulation. MCC published the First revision of cricket law in 1788.





Equipment:

                Equipment is meant by a tool needed to succeed in a particular task. It has become a necessary item in the games. Cricket equipment is necessary for a cricket player to succeed. A player without proper equipment is said to be a fool standing in between the crowds.



                At that time, all these items that were used in cricket are handmade and not industrially produced. The cricket bat at that time was made up of leather, twine, and cork. Dennis Lille tried to play with an aluminum bat but was rejected by umpires. But today we see the addition of protective gear, helmets, and pads in the game of cricket.

               Cricket bats and balls are the two basic types of equipment needed to play that game. They are the precursors of the cricket game. In those days bats and balls are made of low-quality woods and it was not comforting for the players. Now many varieties of cricket bats and balls are there and they provide comfort to the players in all aspects. Due to technology, many new types of equipment came into existence.


 Following are the main and important tools or components of cricket:

1. Cricket Leather Ball:

                      A cricket ball is a hard, solid ball used to play cricket. A cricket ball consists of cork covered by leather. Generally, Leather Cricket Balls are traditionally Red balls. They are used in Test cricket and First-class cricket.

                     White balls were used when one-day matches began being played at night under floodlights. They are visible at night. Professional one-day matches are now played with white balls. Pink-ball is used in day-night Test matches as it has better visibility during the night as compared to the red balls. It is usually used for Test matches. Nationally tennis balls are also used in cricket.





3. Cricket Bat:

                           A cricket bat perform a major role in cricket. It is used by batsmen in the sport of cricket. With a cricket bat, the batsman faces the ball coming from the bowler. A Cricket bat is usually made of willow wood. First time its use is mentioned in 1624.

                            There are many types of cricket bat that are used all over the world. Some of their names are given below

3. Wickets:

                  Wickets also perform a vital role in cricket. Without wickets, there is no existence of cricket. Stumps and bail sets are the wicket sets in cricket. The wicket consists of three stumps and two bails which is one of the equipment showing the dismissing of a batsman. Each wooden stumps are 28 inches (71.12 cm) tall, 22.86cm wide and the distance between two wickets is 22 yards.




4. Leg Guards:

                    Prevention is better than cure. So in any sports prevention is best. Leg guards are worn by batsmen and wicket-keeper to protect their shin bone against the impact of the ball. Superlite, UltraLite guards, etc are the different types of leg guards that are featherweight and provide durability and comfort.




5. Gloves:

                   Gloves should provide comfort, grip, and shock absorption when hitting the ball, it is an essential part of cricket equipments which prevents the player's hand from injuries. Cricket batting gloves exist in different types with different features and wicket-keeper gloves are also there which slightly differs from the batsmen gloves. 



6. Protective gears:

                    Protective gears are the equipments needed for a particular activity and act as safeguarding equipments for the player. Helmet, arm guards, chest protectors, thigh guards, and ab guards are the different protective gears which prevents players from being harmed or damaged.



 


7. Cricket Uniform or Dress:

                “Clothes make the man” is a famous proverb. Cricket players have their own clothing with different numbers and different colors representing their nation. . Hats, wrist bands, headbands come under the category of Clothes of Cricketers.

                In test matches, all the team players generally wear white pants and shirts. These White Clothes in cricket is also known as Flannels. It consists of trousers, a shirt and a jumper that usually worn in test matches.



8. Sandals or Shoes:

                    To maximize performance and skill in the field of cricket, shoes play an important role. various types of footwear shoes are used by cricket players. Cricket players use spiked cricket shoes to improve their traction. Cricket shoes are generally light weighted and enable fast running.




  • Pitch :

                    Pitch is the main and central area in which all the matches depend. Generally, the dimensions of a pitch are 20.12m long from one stump to another stump plus a minimum of 1.22m behind the stumps to accommodate the return crease and bowler approach area. The width of a pitch is about 3.05m. On one side the bowler throws the ball and on the other side, the batsman faces the ball.

Players:

             There are two teams and 11 players on each team. When team one wins the toss then team one bat and team two bowling and fielding.

1.Batting Team:

                        Batting team bats an inning and scores a run. There are two players in batsman one is called Striker which faces the ball and the other is called Non-Striker which is on another side of Striker.



2. Fielding Team:

                          Fielding Team bowls and gets the batting team out.




Wicket Keeper: 
                         The wicket Keeper is standing behind the Striker to catch the ball and get the Striker out. It is also known as a fielder.



3. Umpires: 

               There are two umpires in the ground that observe the Bowler and Batman. By using his hand gesture he gives an indication that whether it is six, four, or out.


Scoring and Getting Out:

                                               When a bowler bowls the balls to the striker then Striker tries to hit the ball with a bat then there are three possibilities 
  • Striker score runs
  • Ball is missed
  • Gets out

Runs: 

              When Strike hits the ball with the bat and the ball remains inside the field or boundary then it has the possibility to score runs (1,2,3) across the pitch by replacement of their places of striker and non-striker. Each crossing pitch has one score.
        When the ball goes out of the boundary by touching the ground  then it considered Four Runs and when the ball flies outside the field without touching the ground is considered six runs.
   


Getting Out:

             There are various conditions of Getting out ;
  • Strike Out
  • Caught Out
  • Thrown Out
  • LBW Out etc
Strike Out: When ball hits the stumps, then it is called Strike Out.

Caught Out: When Fielder catches the Ball before it touches the ground.

Thrown Out: When Batsman run across and fielder hits stumps with the ball before reaches batting crease. Then it is called thrown out.

LBW (Leg Before Wicket): When Striker does not hit the ball with bat and ball hits the leg of Striker front of wicket.Then this type of out is called LBW Out.





Win Team: Team which achieve more runs become a winning team.
